Welcome
to the Interdisciplinary Studies Field area
Our Group was put together
by our field committee that includes
representatives of seven learned societies:
- African
Studies Association - Loree Jones
- American
Association for the Advancement of Slavic
Studies - Nathaniel
Knight
- Association
for Jewish Studies - Aaron
Katchen
- Latin
American Studies Association - David Block
- Middle
East Studies Association - Brenda
Bickett & Anne Betteridge and
- Renaissance
Society of America - William
Bowen
Committee members share
interests in studying particular regions, time
periods, or thematically defined subjects across
disciplines. Interdisciplinary studies scholars
are most concerned with the ways in which
technological advances can help them make the
most of a rare commoditytime in which to
conduct research.
Often the difficulties of
travel to far-flung research sites further
complicate interdisciplinary research. Scholars
seek increased accessibility of original sources,
as well as advances in the quantity and quality
of sources available electronically.
Further, they recommend the
development of coherent and reliable means for
vetting, organizing, and searching through
materials made available through new
technologies.
Problems associated with
the use of non-Roman alphabets in electronic
formats are an additional source of frustration
for some interdisciplinary studies scholars.
Many advocate use of new
technologies for sharing information responsibly
with a broadly defined community of educators,
including those in pre-collegiate education, and
with the public. New technologies also facilitate
scholarly communication, particularly important
in international collaborations. Scholars see
on-line publishing as a hopeful development,
provided that proper academic credit attaches to
publications distributed through new media.
Finally, it is important to develop practical
ways to educate scholars in the use of new
computing technology.
