FIELD AGENDA

Thursday

Session 1: Thursday 9:-10:30

Introductions
Report on Questionnaires

Session 2: Thursday 11-12:30

Goal: to articulate by field and across disciplines the most pressing needs in the humanities that networked computing should be able to meet
Catalyst:
Opera of the Future & perhaps a dance project
Questions:
What does "technology" mean in this context?
In relation to the way we work, what is this project getting right?
Where does this project fail?
What are the key ways in which this project is similar to/different from my own work?
Decision:
What paradigms (interface between human beings, information and equipment) of computing are most useful to us at the present?
What paradigms need most immediate development?
What hardware developments would be most helpful?
What software developments would be most helpful?

Friday

Session 3: Friday 2-3:30 & Session : Friday 4-5:30

Goal: to outline a number of practical projects and next steps that computer scientists will be able to assist with in answering those needs

Catalyst: Performance in History

Questions:

What is needed for this project to reach its goals?

What similar projects can utilize the insights and methodologies of this effort?

How can I use this work in my teaching/performance/research?

What methodologies of creation are effective or ineffective?

Decision:

What specific proposals can be given to NINCH?

What specific things about computers don't we understand that we need to?

Given the current state of technology, what is the projected life of this project

What needs to happen to make this project viable for at least as long as other technologies (e.g., books)?

Saturday

Session 5: Saturday 2-3:30 & Session 6: Saturday 4-5:30

Goal: to outline the beginnings of a longer-term research agenda that humanists and computer scientists can collaborate on

Catalyst: Virtual Reality in Performance (e.g., U.Kansas projects)
Questions:
How do new technologies change the way we experience the world?

What elements remain constant across technologies?

Are artists followers or leaders in the use of technologies?

How would I like my work to change in the next 10 years, or how has it changed in the past 10 years?

Decision:
Where do I seek/need help most frequently in new technologies?

What is the new technology I have used most successfully in the past 3 years?

What would I have to give up if I moved to proposed but not yet realized technologies?

If I could work directly with a computer scientist, what product would I most like to develop?
